Dr. Hyun-Ah Kim

Centre for Reformation & Renaissance Studies, University of Toronto (Canada)

is an expert on Christian music as well as Reformation musical history and theology.
At the Johannes a Lasco Bibliothek, she will explore the Christian Hebraism of Philips van Marnix (1540–1598), focusing on his Het Boeck der Psalmen Dauids (1580/1591), Dutch Protestant exile, and the humanist tradition of Psalmody as musica poetica. Marnix was a leading Dutch Hebraist of his day, yet has been neglected by existing studies of Christian Hebraism. This research lays out the intellectual and religious context of Marnix and ties specific lexical and poetical strategies to Hebrew traditions.
